Ogni minuto cinque bambini al di sotto dei cinque anni muoiono nel mondo per malnutrizione. Ogni anno 5,4 milioni di bambini pagano il prezzo più alto di guerre, condizioni ambientali, climatiche e politiche sfavorevoli. Nel 2017 il numero di coloro che soffrono la fame nel mondo è passato da 804 a 821 milioni. Siamo tornati ai livelli di 10 anni fa. Una persona su nove nel mondo non ha abbastanza da mangiare.
Un rapporto di Save the Children dal titolo “Lontani dagli occhi, lontani dai cuori. Fuori dalle luci dei riflettori milioni di bambini continuano a morire di malnutrizione. A casa loro”, appena pubblicato, mette in evidenza che tra i più poveri in assoluto ci sono 151 milioni di bambini sotto i cinque anni che soffrono le gravissime ripercussioni della malnutrizione acuta, che provoca una rapidissima e pericolosa perdita di peso, dovuta a una improvvisa carenza di cibo e nutrienti, mentre un minore su 4 è invece malnutrito cronico e rischia di subire fortissimi ritardi nella crescita, sia dal punto di vista fisico che cognitivo, compromettendo irrimediabilmente il suo stesso futuro.
Ma questi numeri non bastano, anche perché sottostimati. Il monitoraggio esclude infatti all’incirca 250 milioni tra uomini, donne e bambini che si trovano in particolari situazioni di emergenza e di conflitto.
Il cambiamento climatico è uno degli ostacoli che negli ultimi anni si sono posti con maggior forza sul cammino della lotta alla malnutrizione. La siccità prolungata in Kenya, Etiopia e Somalia ha colpito più 17 milioni di persone, esponendo 700mila bambini a malnutrizione, malattie e abbandono scolastico. Eppure eventi meteorologici estremi, come i cicloni Irma e Maria, che hanno colpito i Caraibi mettendo più di un milione e mezzo di persone in condizione di aver bisogno di assistenza umanitaria, costituiscono solo uno dei problemi, probabilmente non il più grave.

Si stima che nel mondo siano 350 milioni i bambini che vivono in zone colpite da conflitti. Nei 10 paesi maggiormente devastati da guerre (Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Repubblica Centrafricana, Repubblica Democratica del Congo, Siria, Somalia, Sudan, Sud Sudan, Yemen), si calcola che siano 4,5 milioni i bambini sotto i cinque anni afflitti da malnutrizione acuta. Di questi quasi 600mila rischiano di non arrivare vivi alla fine di quest’anno se non riceveranno un’adeguata assistenza umanitaria.
In Yemen, dove è in corso una guerra atroce che ha già causato più di 10mila vittime e 40mila feriti, più di tre milioni sono gli sfollati e 12 milioni le personeche rischiano la morte per fame e inedia. La tragedia dello Yemen, il paese più povero del mondo arabo ma che ha la disgrazia di trovarsi in una posizione strategica, affacciato sul Golfo di Aden, si sta compiendo nell’indifferenza dell’Europa. E’ il conflitto dimenticato. La grande macchina dei media occidentali ha volutamente oscurato quanto accade in questo piccolo angolo di mondo per non disturbare i monarchi sauditi e i lucrosi traffici che gli Usa e i paesi europei svolgono con le petromonarchie. Oltre a bombardamenti indiscriminati, che proseguono incessanti dal 25 marzo 2015 da parte della coalizione del Golfo, guidata da Arabia Saudita e sostenuta da Usa, Francia, Gran Bretagna – ma anche dall’Italia, che rifornisce vorticosamente la macchina bellica saudita – lo Yemen è sottoposto a un embargo per via marittima e aerea. Senza considerare che anche i porti di attracco sono stati bombardati. Moltissimi i bambini uccisi, si pensa un quarto delle vittime totali. Un uomo, rifugiato nella zona di Al Hudaydah, ci racconta che “missili e bombe a grappolo esplodono continuamente sulla popolazione. Siamo stati costretti a fuggire qui, dice, perché è il posto più sicuro, ma la nostra situazione è senza speranza, qui non c’è più nulla, né cibo, né vestiti, soprattutto non abbiamo un tetto sopra la testa”.
D’altronde, i soldi comprano tutto, anche il silenzio dell’Onu. Che nel 2016 s’inchinò e modificò un documento già pubblico. Ad ammetterlo fu lo stesso ex segretario generale, Ban Ki Moon. L’Onu aveva inserito la coalizione del Golfo, impegnata nello sterminio dello Yemen, in una black-list di organizzazioni che violano i diritti dei bambini nel mondo, tra le quali anche Daesh e Boko Haram, altre creature delle petro monarchie più ricche al mondo. L’elenco fu reso pubblico il 2 giugno 2016 nel rapporto annuale del Rappresentante speciale per i bambini e i conflitti armati. Ma l’Arabia Saudita minacciò le Nazioni Unitedi tagliare i fondi, in particolar modo i 100 milioni di dollari che fornisce all’Agenzia Onu per i rifugiati palestinesi (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, Unrwa). E così la black-listfu depurata.
E’ la legge del dio denaro quella che guida il mondo; non possiamo dimenticarcelo mai. Per questo, le guerre sai quando cominciano ma non potrai mai prevedere quando e come finiscono.
